What is FSSAI License Registration?

FSSAI License Registration is a legal document containing a 14-digit number. It is granted by Food Safety and Standards Authority of India to a food business under Food Safety and Standards Act 2006. Under the Act, every food business in the country must mandatorily obtain this registration if they are engaged in manufacturing, processing, packaging, storing, selling or transporting food.

This requirement is meant to ensure that food is prepared hygienically, unadulterated and safe for human consumption. To apply for the registration, the applicant needs to file an online application via the FoSCoS portal, which is the official FSSAI license portal.

Eligibility for FSSAI License Registration

The eligibility criteria for FSSAI registration is as follows:

  • The business must be engaged in the manufacture, processing, packaging, storage, transportation, distribution or sale of food products.
  • For FSSAI Basic Registration, the FBO’s annual turnover must be up to Rs. 1.5 crore.
  • For FSSAI State License, the FBO’s annual turnover must be more than Rs. 1.5 crore and up to Rs. 50 crore. In addition, the business should generally operate within a single state.

There are three types of FSSAI licenses in total, i.e., FSSAI Basic Registration/License, State License and Central License. Depending on the turnover and scale of business operations, an FBO must apply for the appropriate license. Below, we have explained all the three types of FSSAI licenses:

FSSAI Central License

FSSAI Central License must be mandatorily obtained by FBOs if their annual turnover exceeds Rs. 50 crore or if they are engaged in import/export or operate in multiple states.
