We use two types of gas for cooking in our homes—LPG gas cylinders and PNG gas, which is supplied through pipelines directly to our houses. But do you know what PNG is, where it comes from, how it reaches your home, what it costs, and how you can get a new connection? Welcome to Registrationkraft, where you will get every small detail related to PNG in simple language. This content is based on thorough research, so make sure to read it till the end—it might be very useful for you.

What is PNG (Piped Natural Gas)?

PNG stands for Piped Natural Gas. It is a type of natural gas that mainly contains methane. This gas is considered clean, safe, and environmentally friendly. PNG is extracted from underground sources and is then refined before being supplied to homes through pipelines.

How PNG Reaches Your Home

In India, there are several city gas distribution companies such as Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL), Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL), and Gujarat Gas Limited. These companies transport PNG through large pipelines to cities. At city gas stations (CGS), the pressure of the gas is reduced because high-pressure gas is not safe for household use. After that, the gas is distributed to homes through smaller pipelines.

For example, if gas needs to be supplied from Delhi to homes in Noida, it first reaches the City Gas Station in high pressure. There, the pressure is reduced, and then it is supplied to homes through pipelines.

Safety Features of PNG Gas

You might be wondering what happens if there is a fire in the pipeline. For safety, a small valve is installed near the meter. If the pipeline inside your home gets damaged or disconnected, this valve automatically senses the gas flow and shuts off the supply.

Also, there is no oxygen inside the pipeline—only pure gas—so fire cannot occur inside it. Fire requires oxygen, which is why it cannot occur in such conditions. Even if gas leaks and comes in contact with air, automatic systems immediately stop the gas supply. Additionally, pipelines have automatic shut-off valves that instantly cut off supply if a leak is detected.

Price of PNG Gas

PNG is generally cheaper than LPG. Every house has a meter installed, and you only pay for the gas you use. The price usually ranges between ₹35 to ₹60 per unit, depending on the city.

Documents Required

You will need to submit some basic documents such as ID proof (Aadhaar card), address proof (Aadhaar card, electricity bill, or water bill), and a passport-size photograph.

Benefits of Using PNG Gas

PNG is cost-effective because you only pay for what you use. It is safer than LPG because it is lighter than air, so in case of leakage, it disperses upward instead of accumulating near the ground.

It also has advanced safety systems like automatic shut-off valves and sensors, which reduce the risk of accidents. PNG is environmentally friendly as it produces less smoke and pollution.

Another major advantage is continuous supply—you don’t have to worry about the gas running out like in LPG cylinders. Additionally, the billing system is accurate because it is based on actual usage through a meter.
