PM Vishwakarma Yojana, a Central Sector Scheme, was launched on 17th September, 2023 by Prime Minister Modi on the special occasion of his 73rd birthday. The scheme has a budget of Rs 15 crore through which it’ll provide comprehensive support to the small employees and skilled craftspeople. This initiative is a tribute towards the Vishwakarma Jayanti and focuses on offering financial assistance, training, advice on skill development, and knowledge of latest technology to those involved in traditional trades such as the washermen, barbers, goldsmiths, metalworkers, etc.

  • Key Objectives: It aims at promoting training and skill development. It encourages the use of modern technology over outdated technology and provides collateral-free financing, promotes online commerce, establishes market networks and supports the promotion of brands.
  • Approaches: The scheme offers a step-by-step guide to the creators. It preserves traditional skills and cultural traditions, integrates the respondents into the economic system, rolls out to both urban and rural areas and promotes the efficiency of women and oppressed groups.
  • Coverage and Scope: Includes eighteen traditional trades in distant and rural locations. Acknowledgment and Assistance: supplying a PM Vishwakarma certificate and a guide for collateral-free credit up to Rs 2 lakh at a discounted interest rate of 5%.
  • Empowerment and Skill Development: The scheme will allocate between Rs 13,000 and Rs 15,000 crore over five years, with a Rs 500 allowance for skill development and Rs 1,500 for tool acquisition.
  • Integration with Value Chains: Incorporating craftspeople into domestic and global value chains in a seamless manner.
  • Loan Access: Fast loans up to Rs 2,00,000 with a cheap 5% interest rate are available.
  • Enhancement of Skills: Making skill development a priority through thorough training initiatives.  
  • Support for Stipend: During the training under this scheme, recipients are eligible for a daily stipend of Rs 500.
  • Tool Kit Assistance: The scheme offers Rs 15,000 for the purchase of advanced tools.
  • Official Recognition: An Identity Card and PM Vishwakarma Certificate are given to the participants under this scheme.

Eligibility Criteria and Required Documents 

In order to be eligible for this PM Vishwakarma Yojana, the individuals must be artisans or craftsmen aged 18 or above. They must be engaged in any of the 18 trades, i.e., viz. Carpenter (Suthar/Badhai), Boat Maker, Armourer, Blacksmith (Lohar), Hammer and Tool Kit Maker, Locksmith, Goldsmith (Sonar), Potter (Kumhaar), Sculptor (Moortikar, stone carver), Stone breaker, Cobbler (Charmkar)/ Shoesmith/Footwear artisan, Mason (Rajmistri), Basket/Mat/Broom Maker/Coir Weaver, Doll & Toy Maker (Traditional), Barber (Naai), Garland maker (Malakaar), Washerman (Dhobi), Tailor (Darzi) and Fishing Net Maker. The benefits under the scheme can only be availed by one member per family.
